The hills of Santa Cruz in the distance are still lit but the cliffs of Aptos in the foreground are already into the night as the sun sets over Monterey Bay. This photo is looking north, and the beach curves for 20 miles south and then west before reaching the peninsula of Carmel and Pebble Beach.
