One advantage of living on the California coast (and also one of the disadvantages in terms of home maintenance!) is the first view of Pacific storms that are essentially unimpeded in their journey of more than two thousand miles . Skies like this are common in the winter, the water-laden clouds providing the deep Sierra snowpack that will ultimately fill the reservoirs and ensure water and electricity for 10 million northern Californians. This storm coming in from the northwest has already started to precipitate rain and will shortly unload a torrential downpour over the Santa Cruz mountains.
