Black wrought iron gates contrast with the startling white of building walls in the tourist-oriented main town. The town of Fira is arranged along the cliff edge and the shops accessed via narrow lanes. As in all tourist spots, tacky gift shops are jumbled with stores offering island produce and those selling upscale items at inflated prices.
