Cruise ships approach the steep, volcanic cliffs of Santorini, drop anchor offshore, and transfer passengers to the narrow quay. From there the choice to the cliff top is either by cable car or by donkey. The view from the cliff top is surely one not to be missed for any visitor to Greece. And for the photographer the whole cliff top and its buildings provide an astonishing opportunity for capturing color, seascape, and architecture. The main island of Thera has a cliff height of 564m, and is what remains of a 1650 B.C. eruption said to have been 23 miles high, probably causing the end of the Minoan civilization in Crete, 63 miles away.
